Stafford runs several water systems, each with its own state ID

Stafford and Manahawkin water comes from Stafford Township Water & Sewer, which lists separate systems with their own state IDs. The aquifer should be listed in the township's annual report, so ask for your system's copy.

The pH, hardness and test results should be listed in that report as well. We could not confirm the aquifers or those figures, so this page names none. What follows comes from an archived copy of the township's water page, from October 2026.

Which system are you on?

Your address decides it, and your bill or the township can tell you. A report for one system is not a report for all of them, so check the name and ID on the cover when you get your copy. Our brief on these reports explains the table inside.

Where does the township's pipe stop?

At the curb stop or meter pit. The page says the township maintains mains up to that point and owners are responsible beyond it. This is the clearest local wording we found, and our brief on it explains why to learn your own shutoff and leave the street valve to the township. For the notices behind inventories like Beach Haven West's, see the state's lead line law.

What if you are on a well here?

Then the Pinelands numbers are the closer comparison. The Commission's 2021 municipal list gives Stafford two labels for its land: State Pinelands Area for part, National Reserve for part. That says nothing about your own well, which only a test can answer. A state law requires testing at sale, and the county adds its own certification, as the story on the sale test explains.

Is Manahawkin sewered?

The township runs a Water & Sewer department and is a named customer of the county's utilities authority, OCUA. Whether your own street is connected is a separate question for the department.

What about the bay side?

Houses on the township's bay side, Beach Haven West among them, may have lagoon-side plumbing questions. That story covers low equipment, the sewer lateral and what a 2025 service line inventory can tell an owner.

Who to ask

  • Stafford Township Water & Sewer: your system's name, its annual report, its aquifers, and your street's sewer status.
  • Ocean County Health Department: private well certification and septic plan review.
  • Pinelands Commission: any question about its rules on your lot.
